The Alliance Tournament as a New Player Experience

The vast and extraordinary beauty of EVE’s New Eden cluster allows capsuleers to write their own story in the skies, with each encounter adding another strand to the rich quilt that is EVE.

New Eden is an environment where we can build any kind of life for ourselves we can dream of. It is an at once frightening and exhilarating prospect to be the master of ones own destiny.

In the wider scope of MMOGs and online gaming in general it offers opportunities that other places simply cannot match.

One of the challenges of New Eden is to have our new space brothers and sisters lose their first-time jitters and gain their own footing as a pod pilot, they have to overcome threats from the environment as well as those from other pilots to become full members of the community. Too often that proves to be a hurdle that can’t be overcome. EVE is a harsh place and it presents itself as inhospitable when all it takes is a deeper understanding of how the environment works and how it can be used to achieve ones own goals.

There is one avenue that is underserved as a means to pull in and retain new players. It is an extension of a popular event in New Eden: the Alliance Tournament. It has not been organised recently but not for lack of a desire by pilots to engage in it. The Alliance Tournament pits experienced, and less experienced pilots alike against each other in fights that are a combination of skill and cunning in deploying fleets in a dizzying array of ships and fittings, each decision having a direct impact on the outcome of the fight.

It seems to be just one extra step to take to use the already existing environment of New Eden, to extend that idea to new players and allow them to engage in Tournament-style encounters as a form of e-sport that EVE ships naturally allows for.

- It does not require building an environment: EVE Online already exists and there is a universe of space for players to joust in

- It does not require the creation of new weapons and ammunitions: EVE Online already has a panoply of existing, combat-tested ships and fittings, literally available off the shelf

- It does not require complex setups: we have very successfully partaken in Alliance Tournaments that were organised flawlessly (with hiccups, of course, that’s how the universe works)

EVE Online, today, could host thousands of tournament engagements, we are already engaging in the whole gamut of small fleet skirmishes to entire apocalyptic space battles, and that’s happened for years now.

How easy would it be to build an environment where players would create a ‘Tournament Account’ and to be allowed to enter in championships that run all the time? These pilots would gain an understanding of how to build and run small fleet skirmishes and, perhaps, large-scale encounters over time. They would be immersed in the New Eden universe and develop an interest for the wider opportunities the universe offers. A fantastic advantage would be that their tournament experience would give them awareness and experience of how to fight in fleets in the actual universe, outside of tournaments. These would be seasoned, actual battle-hardened veterans by the time they sought to make a name for themselves outside of the tournament arena, and they would not be daunted by the loss of a ship.

Inviting these new pilots to enter in tournaments, would entice new players to join the fray. This would be good for New Eden in general, it could be a fantastic new e-sport that thousands would happily engage with.

We have recently gained a whole slew of new Korean friends for whom e-sports is not a new concept, who are competitive and who would no doubt want to show off their skills, versus old hands with many years of experience in actual New Eden fleet deployments.

This is an opportunity that CCP cannot miss out on. The investment should be negligible, the pay off should be substantial and it would enrich the New Eden experience that much more, as well as establish New Eden as a platform for e-sports, the potential of which scarcely knows any bounds. The sky is not even the limit.

Next to adding to the cultural phenomenon that is EVE Online, CCP could build this into an exquisite revenue driver and gain broad recognition in the wider online gaming community.
